LIGHTING DEPTH

Lighting depth including conceptual design and space analysis base on quantitative and qualitative criteria. The goal is to make a practical and functional lighting solution for spaces. As the world first net zero energy lab building, lab space in JCVI building will be carefully studied. In response to zero energy concept, lighting design for lab space will consider energy code requirements and energy consumption. The plaza is treated as circulation space, transit people from one side of the building to the other. The space is semi-open, which receive abundant daylighting during the day. A daylighting study will be performed for this space. Psychological impression will be involved in the design of entry lobby provide a spaciousness feeling.

ELECTRICAL DEPTH

As a biological research lab, a great amount of experiments will be conducted in this building. The majority of the experiments are very time-consuming and high cost, which makes it reasonable to back up all the lab equipment with generator. The cost may increase a lot however it is still worth to do it.

Increasing the size of the generator will also impact the cooling and heating system. More heating and cooling may be required in certain space. They should also be back up along with the lab equipment. From architectural aspect, acoustic is an another big concern. Insulation should be added into the wall to isolate noise.

MECHANICAL DEPTH

Due to the reason that I am going to size up the generator, heating and cooling system need to size up also in order to accommodate a larger electrical load. I will mainly study the mechanical system in lab space. Features a curtain wall system, this space receives abundant daylighting during the day. My study will focus on how to utilize natural ventilation to reduce heating and cooling load.

The layout of mechanical equipment will be another concern. Due to the narrow shape of this space, how to layout the equipment efficiently is very important. Any other reasonable change might be done on this space through further study and research. The goal is to reduce energy usage, support the idea of “net zero energy building”.
